Updates from Regional and National Meetings. I tried to attached the PDF of the notes from the national meeting and it's too large of a file. Will try to convert it to another format post here but not sure if I can. Interesting how some of the regional and national issues are around lapses in renewing memberships, MI needs funding. Also, abuse of rules or lack there of for chapter release contests is an issue. National will be voting on whether to no longer sanction these or not. Chapters could still run them but without any national recognition. They want chapter feedback

Muskies, Inc. Region 3 Chapter Presidents & Representatives,

We are starting a new email format for Chapter communications and will now strive to provide a monthly report that covers all of the important information to Chapters, ranging from Executive Committee updates to member drop lists. Please let us know if this format works or if there are changes or additional items you would like to see each month…

MI Annual Meeting Report:
· Attached is a report by Max Machuta and myself from the MI Annual Meeting that was held in Campbellsville, KY about a month ago. My apologies for not getting this out sooner as the minutes of the meeting were not available until a few days ago and I wanted to wait and include some notes from the Executive Committee telecom held earlier tonight as well.

June 4th EC Telecom Report:
· The motion passed at the Annual Board meeting to suspend the Members Only Fishing Contest has been rendered inactive until the details of the motion are fully described and Chapter feedback is solicited. There was some confusion at the meeting regarding the extent of the motion, whether to cut out the plaques and replace them with certificates or to cut the contest all together. Chapter feedback on a position on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

· The financial records from the previous MI Treasurer have finally been retrieved, which cover from 2004 until about 2008.
MI has received a bill from the IRS for penalties and late fees due to the inability to file a return without those records. The audit agency hired to deal with this matter at the time suggested an approach that apparently was not correct and an appeal to the IRS bill will be filed and/or legal recourse against the audit agency.

· The collaboration between MI and the FishHound website fishhounddotcom has been postponed until the legal aspects and benefit to MI members is fully understood. Members are encouraged to visit the website and provide feedback on any potential collaborations.

· The new Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) is still looking for 3 “major positive changes” to focus their planning activities around. If anybody has any suggestions for changes to the MI concept of operations, please provide input to Max or Joel.

· Registration for the 2012 Youth Fishing event on Moose Lake in Hayward, WI is now open and five Chapters have already signed up. Participation is limited to 30 youth and registration can be done on the MI or Youth Conservation Alliance theycadotorg websites.

Region 3 Action Items & Member Drop List:
· Two Chapters in Region 3 still need to send in their signed charters to Ellen Wells ASAP, those are Chapter 18 HOPEDALE and Chapter 50 PENN-JERSEY.

· Membership lapses continue to be a major problem for the organization. Attached is the list of member lapses that have occurred in May listed by Chapter. Please have someone from your Chapter contact these individuals to remind them to renew or at least understand why they chose not to renew their membership.

Region 3 News & Upcoming Events:
· Please remember to begin planning for the Region 3 Fall Meeting, which will be held in the Akron/Canton, OH area on Saturday, October 20th this year. There are some details regarding how to prepare for it in the attached report. Most importantly, we need to find at least two candidates for RR positions. Also, please avoid scheduling any meetings or outings for that weekend to ensure maximum participation.

· We’re getting a NEW Chapter!! Chapter 61 will be starting up shortly based in the Western New York state area. This exciting news is great to provide additional coverage to the amazing fisheries of the Lake Ontario, Niagara River, and St. Lawrence River areas.

Regards,

Joel Johnson

MI Region 3 Representative

Mike,

Thanks for posting these updates. Who is responsible for our charter? I thought we had submitted that years ago. Perhaps that needs to be done on a yearly basis?
It sounds like International is falling victim to the financial realities of today. Less paid membership is curtailing what we can do nationally. That and the obvious errors made in their Treasury division and IRS penalties are not helping matters any.
Oh well, I guess the best we can do is to keep our heads down and continue with the work that we finance locally. Thanks again for posting.
