freshly stocked fish?

Got a question(X2).. A freind of mine caught a 19" pure yesterday. The ? is.... If there is a 19" in the river, does this mean that it must have been stocked within the last couple years? I am guessing that the musky do not reproduce naturally around here. And ? #2... He also caught a 41" pure this morning that got tangled up in the line pretty good, he said the fish was really tired by the time he started holding it in the water. He said 20 minutes of getting water to it he finally let go and the fish slowly swam to deeper water, do you think this fish will survive?

Hi,

1) I don't know, but it sounds like a stocked fish. IMO, there is natural reproduction going on in some Eastern PA waters, which river are you referring too?

2) I had a hell of a time releasing my fish last weekend. They were all tangled up in the line and rolled in the net. All you can do is get in there with knipex cutters and start cutting hooks right away if the lure is buried. Always carry jaw spreaders! Get the lure free then leave the fish sitting upright in the net and make sure they have some vigor before picking them up for a quick measurement and picture. The 46 I released did not want to go and I actually thought we might loose her. But she slowly swam off. If the fish is really stressed, just make sure the fish can hold itself upright on it's own and let it hold itself upright on it's own power. The key is to not move it around much once it's back in the water, just guide it to an upright position and let it swim off on it's own.

I caught one 34 incher that got quickly placed on the bump board and quickly released in great shape, that's the way to go if you can.

The Susquehanna river is where we fish. Most NE part of PA. As far as the fish, the He said the lure was out but the it wrapped itself around the line a few times. Anyhow the fish did swim away, so I can only hope. I went another weekend without fishing for them, strictly Largemouth. Well hey thanks for the info. As far as the natural reproduction .... I was told once that a stocked musky cannot reproduce in the wild. True or False?

Absolutely false. Stocked tiger muskies can not successfully spawn but stocked pures certainly can and do. The success rate is probably low and that is why the state stocks fish. On a side note, I saw that PA is stopping the stocking of walleye in the Susquehanna because of the amount of success the fish are having in naturally reproducing.

Actually, the 3 year study is to find out how well the walleye are reproducing on their own. I'm sure the last 5 years of bad spawns or the bacteria killing the smallmouth have nothing to do with it. ::) The fish commission have taken our muskie stockings away (Juniata River and Susquehanna River between fiberdam and Harrisburg) - why not walleye, too.

Hey,

Who knows, in just a few years, the only thing we may be able to catch out of our rivers will be flathead catfish, carp and, thanks to Ed, the occassional pickeral!!!
As to the breeding ability of the pures that are stocked, it can happen but the odds of someone catching a, what would be, naturally produced fish in the waters east of the Alleghany are pretty slim.

That would be nice if they were actually reproducing around here. As far as walleye, I think last winter we caught over 40 of them between the two of us and nothing was over 13". I also wonder if they are sauger. Can't really tell the difference other than on a picture. Anyhow, .... thanks for the input, from what you all said, I would have to guess this fish was a stocked fish.
