Anyone using this reel? I was looking at one at Cabelas and it looks and feels like a solid reel,it holds 270yds./14lb,but I don't read about too many muskie guys using it.I currently use Abu 5501 C3's spooled with 65lb test Power Pro,which are fine, but was looking for something in between the 5501 and the Calcutta TE for my new rod ,and I don't want to spend big $$$ on the Calcutta TE!! Just curious. Thanks!!!

Bugbit,

I have completely transitioned to this reel. I have 4 now and LOVE them. Lots of line capacity and the drags are very nice. I like the low profile also. I know some of the guys in the upper mid-west and Canada are going to this reel extensively. They throw the 10"+ HR's and other giant jerkbaits and cranks too.

Try one, I think you will be impressed.

Greg, A better drag you say? Now that's what I,m looking for!! I am not real impressed with the Abu's.I usually fish with the drag cranked all the way down and it still seems like it's not enough! And I do like the lower profile of the Quantum! Anyone looking for 2 BRAND NEW, '06 model, Abu 5501 c3's spooled with 65# test Power Pro? Boxes, books and all! $140.00 for both.

Hey Bugbit,

Too bad they're not the 6500 or 6501 series. I would have snatched them up, if that had been the case.

DL, I got the 5501's because they are smaller in size than 6501,which,when casting all day, the lighter the better I say, but you can still fit 150 yds of 65 lb test on them. How many muskies have you caught that ran 150 yds.? When casting? True the 6501 has a "clicker" which might be favorable for trolling, butI prefer a line counter when trolling so I know exactly how far back my lures are running each time I troll, so I only use these reels for casting. Now on my trolling reels, which are Cabelas depth master gold 20L, I have about 300 yds of 80 lb test.I might have out more line when a fish hits, so it keeps me at peace! Anyway, I might just take them back to Cabelas for a refund.

David,

The ABU 5501's are selling for about $50. on ebay, in the box. You might do better taking them back to Cabelas and trading them in on the Quantum Cabos. All the reels I fish have clickers, just in case I need to troll to give my arms a break on those 12 hour Susky trips.

D, I'm heading down there this afternoon to exchange, bringing limited funds so I don't get in any more trouble with the wife! She keeps a watchful eye when I head down there!!! {[{[
