My motor sounds sluggish when running in between idol and full speed. It's a 40 hp merc 4 stroke tiller. I don't think it's cheap gas, because it has been doing this for a few months now and have re-filled the tank several times. At low speed or idol speed its fine. And when running it flat out top speed its fine. But at in between speeds it shakes and sputters and sounds like it wants to crap out. Any ideas on what to check for? I don't want to take it to a repair shop if I can avoid it. I personally have not done maintenance on this motor in the past (took it to a shop) and just wanted to see if anyone had the same problem or suggestions before I go digging around in there.

Thanks,
Tim

Tim

Check your plugs and wires clean them up, maybe it is something simple. Also heard that carbs have been getting build up from the ethanol and giving people problems. You could google search the ethanol problem and see if it sounds like it
Good Luck

It sounds like one of your ports in your carb is clogged.I'd replace the plugs an run some stable thru the motor.you may have to take the carb off an let it soak in gum out.

check for possible water laying in bottom of tank or fuel filter.Does sound like a possible plug issue like Mr. Johnson said.

Well, I used the red! That's what I winterized the boat with and there was probably some of that left over in the tank. Thanks for the info guys.
