i heard that the state of maine has seen an increase in muskellunge invading their rivers. the state is upset that their brook trout populations are rapidly declining in these rivers. i thought the native muskie strain to maine ate lobsters?

do any of you have any brook trout patterns? i am going to maine on vacation in 3 weeks. i promise i'll give them baaack!

Chris,
Good Luck in Maine. I've actually used brookies for bait in the Delaware. Bought 'em in Phillipsburg. The stripers love them, never got any 'skies though.

Chris,

The muskies in question came from a lake stocked in Quebec and are present in the upper St John's drainage.  Maine has not been particularly happy about this, resulting in an unlimited bag limit with no minimum size.  It would be great if they took advantage of this.  Baker Lake (near the western border with Quebec) apparently has the best population, but there are a few other lakes in the area that have them.  My parents have been to Moosehead Lake a few times on vacation, and it looks like a several hour drive on gravel logging roads to get to Baker Lake.

Seems like an interesting trip but I don't know how good the fishing really is.  If I had a week to burn I'm not sure I'd spend it there.

Chris,
I've also heard of muskies much further north by St. Francis in Beau Lake and Glazier Lake. I think Glazier is downstream from Beau and holds the state record of 26+lbs. Travel to and from could be interesting.
