I am new to musky fishing and plan on trying toe upper Deleware River with live shiners. I have a Penn baymaster 6 1/2' basting rod w/ a Penn 965s casting reel spooled w/ 15lb Berkely Big game. Am I heading in the right direction? I know absolutly nothing about Musky fishing and help from you seasoned veterans would be greatly appreciated.Thanks-

Glad to see you are interested in catching the king of the fresh water.This next statement is my opinion and others will feel differently,but i will put it out there any way.i am against live bait fishing.I do not do it, and unless done correctly,can and will hurt the fish.There are some who fish with live bait succesfully and maybe they can explain how they do it without hurting these fish.If you would like someone to take you out,show you how its done and how to handle these hard to catch and hard to raise fish,let me know.We have plenty of members that would be glad to help including myself.Like i said,just let us know.Good luck in catching one of these damn,i mean great fish and hope to here from you.Bob Jones.Ch 50 pres.

I'm with Bob but for different reasons. A properly worked lure will usually raise more fish than live bait anyways, and you can cover more water in a day, which is the real key. Besides, you're much more likely to catch bass than muskies with shiners. And once you pay the $10 for that jerkbait, it's yours forever, unlike that bucket of dead bait you have at the end of the day.
Also, you really want to go fishing with somebody who knows what they are doing. You can go a long time between fish, even if you are doing everything right. Fishing with somebody who has paid their dues helps cut that learning curve down. I'd offer but I don't live in the area anymore.
There is a lot of good information spread around the internet about equipment, lures, and tactics. I won't repeat any of it here.
