George and I met up at Luzerne County Community College and jumped right into the fire. As we thought, it wasn't a big turnout, but impressive considering it was Ash Wednesday. There were plenty of PFBC personnel on hand to talk to. We spoke to one gentleman who ended up calling several people over, one of whom was Tom Pekarsky (sp?) and a Darryl Pierce. We talked about musky stocking and the lack of forage in a lot of the lakes. Darryl said that due to low runoff over the last few years, there has been less food for the bait fish to eat and populations have dropped. There's not much they can do about that except hope for several years of good runoff into the rivers, streams, lakes and reservoirs. This will allow these populations to come back up. This in turn would support larger predatory fish populations. Hence, a healthier musky population also. They did mention that Lilly Lake in Luzerne County now has a nice population of Northern Pike in it. Have to give that a try!

Tom spoke to issues George and I brought up about stocking sizes, survival rates, stocking pure's as opposed to Tigers and so on. He said he did not anticipate the holdovers to have grown much over the winter. Then to begin feeding them minnows would become expensive. If I recall correctly, they had a raceway of young muskies that they dumped 125 lbs. of minnows into. The next day there was a school of minnows about the size of a softball holding in one corner. So the muskies were pretty voracious. And they have to feed them almost daily. He also felt that stocking 8 - 10 inch fish didn't necessarily equate to better survival as the bass were still pretty voracious on the stocked fish. I also asked how many fish they would get out of Belmont for their spawning efforts. He said they were usually 3 or 4 fish in the mid 40 inch range. He also said they may also be the only fish in Belmont! We all chuckled about that. And all their programs are in turmoil right now due to the VHS ban on moving fish across state lines.

If I'm reading my notes correctly, they are stocking the north branch of the Susky for 100 fish for 10 miles. I don't remember if that's all they are putting in or hoping for a population of! Sorry. It was a late night. On the PFBC website there is a section called Biologists reports. There's a lot of god information in there. If we want to possibly get some information on float stocking results, we should contact Mike Hoffman at at their website.

Now I have to go start packing and getting ready to head to Indiana tomorrow. Have a great one and hopefully George can expand on or add some new info upon this. Have a great one everybody!

Ed,

Again, thanks to you and George for making the effort to get there and interact with the State's personnel. Obviously there wasn't a lot of truly positive feedback on the forage fish, the size of the fish that are stocked or their willingness to have us help with minnows to feed the holder overs. At least they know we are active and willing to help.
Thanks again.

Sorry, my notes aren't real good, but Ed pretty much summed things up real well. The guy we initially talked with was Dr. Austin, and he in turn introduced us to Tom Pykarski ,???, and Darryl Pierce both biologists, to listen to us. I think we reiterated the subjects that were important to our club, as Ed mentioned. On a couple side notes, I mentioned to them about the article regarding "fishing for muskies with live bait", and they in turn, introduced me to Eric Levis, Chief, Division of Communications for the PFBC website. We talked briefly about that article, and he was quite dumbfounded. He wasn't aware of that article, and suggested we as a club, "update" that article, and submit it to him. Maybe that's something that we as a club, can do!
I also mentioned to them about the Youth Day, and that are we trying to promote fishing with kids in our area. We talked about our successful Day we had last year for the kids, and our plans for this year's event. I brought up the fee that we are required to pay to the DCNR to have this at Nockamixon. Again, they were unaware of this, but suggested that if we include a "State Official", and make it more of an educational, than strictly a "fun day", that they might be willing to waive the fee. After the seminar, Walter Dietz, Bureau of Policy, Planning, and Communications, approached me about this subject, and suggested that he would be willing to work with this , with us , as well.
All in all, I would say that , our concerns and questions were met with polite attention, whether or not it will lead to anything, time will tell!

TO MUSKIES!!!

Sometimes you've got to "jiggle' it, and sometimes you've got to give it one big
"jerk"
