Upon thinking through Tony Grant's presentation at Cabellas, I've been trying to strategize for my first legal musky. The lakes that I am able to target (Lackawanna State Park, Francis Slocum, Prompton) all have been stocked with Tigers. I know the Susquehanna is also a good resource but will also compromise my 20ft fiberglass boat investment. What sticks with me is that Tony indicated Tigers are fairly shy (ie. less Tigers taken on figure 8's and at boatside) when compared to Pures. Therefore, in purchasing my muskie tackle I am assuming if this holds true, I would have a better chance with suspending baits compared to topwater baits.

PS. any guys that have experience on these lakes ...if so I will be signing up for the muskie school.

Kevin

Kevin,

Musky Ed has experience on some (if not all) of those N.E. PA lakes. I'm guessing he'll be able to take you under his wing for Muskie School.

Opti-

I listened to Tony seminar as well. I think he was really pointing out that Tigers are more skiddish of boats, people, etc. (That explains the few boatside fish) You need to be careful not to spook them when you're approaching where you're going to fish- much like clear water bass fishing. (did I say that?)

Tony fishes a lot of faster moving baits like bucktails, spinnerbaits and rattle traps. These get more of a reaction strike than a suspending bait would. "Tiger time" also falls into the time of year that fish will chase a bait down. In addition, these baits also have a more subtle entry into the water than large cranks, or jerkbaits. This is consistant with not spooking the fish. These are the type of baits that I would be focusing on.

These are generalities. Last year while fishing with Tom, he had a tiger aggressively strike a black bucktail right at the boatside. It happened right when he was just about to lift the lure out of the water. In this case, there were sunny skies, followed by patches of clouds and quick spots of rain- like sun showers. You guessed it- the fish hit right when the rain started to fall! Weather superseded all of the other rules. -Eric

I have a non-commercial website dedicated to Tigers:  http://www.toothycritters.com   There is also a forum there.  We link to one another.

I live in Central Maryland.  Very few naturals here.  However, a lot of the lakes have Tigers in them.  I cast and troll for them.  They WILL take a fish in the propwash and WILL hit a figure 8.   I have taken them on topwaters as the sun comes up, but seldom any other time.
My best lures for taking them?  8" Believers in perch pattern or skunk; Tuff Shads or Super Shad Raps and jigs (yes I use a wire leader).  They will also hit plastic worms with the best color seeming to be bubble gum!!

The best day I've had was three.  All were taken on the larger sized spoonplugs in perch patterns.

Opti,i would treat tigers basically the same as pures.I don't throw many tops but have had a lot of success with bucktails, twitchbaits and jerkbaits.Do not hesitate to go into a figure eight with tigers.Ive caught them on eights before.I've also had them follow an eight, tail of and come back to hit my bucktail as it was dangling in the water and i was looking into the sky asking the muskie gods WHY!Bob

Yep, most of the time they are the same.  They do go deeper in the summer.  The lake I fish has a forest of trees in it.  They will suspend in the tops of those trees (about 20' under) in deep water.   O0

The above photo is of a friend. The fish was about 45". The photo of me (above) is typical of most of the fish in our lake.
