fluorocarbon leader

Anyone use fluorocarbon leader? Anyone trying to make there own with 80lb test? I have, and found the knots a pain in the rear. I found an interesting post that says to use a 'perfection loop' type of knot. It is supposed to be easy to tie and it works really well. Here is the link....http://www.leadertec.com/knots.....ction.html

Also, I read somewhere that fluoro line is NOT the same as fluoro leader, and that the chemical make-up is different. Make sure that you buy the stuff marked as LEADER.

Archie,
I have made casting leaders out of 50 lb. seaguar flourocarbon about 15 inches in length,no problem with the smaller pound test but I heard that you can use a little lubricant to get the knots to pull together tighter on the 80 pound stuff.Your right there is a difference in flourocarbon leader material and line, especialy the cost.

I make all my own leaders fluorocarbon and steel
I try to use the most top quality componants I can find, I use Sampo ball bearing swivels, I use string ease snaps Malin 278lb. steel wire and Climax 80lb. Fluorocarbon.
As for the fluorocarbon, I run 3' leaders for trolling, I always use a ball bearing swivel and Andy showed me a trick on the leaders that make them last longer, Use a spring where the snap and the swivel make contact with the leader.
This the link for the springs on cabelas site;
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas.....hasJS=true
I hope this helps, Jeff

jeff,do you use the fluorocarbon leaders strictly for trolling.and can i assume the leader has the bearing swivel at one end and the snap at the other, and you use two springs per leader. or are you tieing the leader direct to the lure.sorry I'v got no clue on this.

Chuck,
Your right I only use the fluorocarbon leaders for trolling (I use steel for casting) and I always use a ball bearing swivel and a snap.
And your also right about the springs you will have one on the swivel end and one on the snap end , And I should point out that the snaps I use are incredible, They are the string ease, They are strong and they won't come apart.
Take a look; http://www.stringease.com/index.html
There are two reasons for the ball bearing swivel, The first is if you run thru some floating weeds it will collect on the swivel and not on the lure and the other reason is that if you decide to troll bucktails you don't have to change leaders.

I don't tie my leaders I use crimps and I make sure that I only crimp in the center of the crimps only for the fact that if you crimp the edges you can possibly cut the leader with the crimp.

The leaders I make cost a few bucks to make but it's worth it, I know that thier done with top quaility material.
Good hunting, Jeff

jeff, what size fluorocabon do you prefer, and how do you keep the spring on the swivel from falling to the spring on the snap.

I did it!!!!!
As you can see the spring is tight to the crimp.
You just repeat the same for the snap end.
I hope this helps you guys out, Jeff

Hey guys,

Just a quick question from a novice. Are the springs to relieve the stress on the flourocarbon? Are they absolutely necessary?

DL,
They are there to keep the leader from kinking.
You can make the leaders without them, I just started to use them last year and ran leaders without them for years.
I just think that the leaders will last longer with the springs.

good morning-

i use 80 pound flouro leader and purchase actual leader versus line because the leader is stiffer than say castable flouro like vanish. I have found that using a bimini twist works very well. It is easy to tie once you get the hang of it. The nice thing is that if the bimini provides two separate pieces of leader material from the swivel to the not. If one pops, you still have the second leader. Plus, it is better for abrasion when running over rock structure. I have yet to have one pop but there is always a first time. The additional nice feature of using a bimini twist is that the knot absorbs much of the initial shock.

I used these leaders on the St Lawrence thinking they would be an advantage in clear water. I got a Reef Digger sawed off by a 5lb pike that was getting Musky trolling.I wont use them again. Gary T

Maybe it was just a freak thing, I will have to try them again. They must be an advantage in gin-clear waters like the St Lawrence. They are really thick, do you think they will make crankbaits run shallower trolling??  See ya at the meeting , Gary
